2018 has been a hell of a year for the Marvel Netflix Series. We’ve had Jessica Jones: Season 2 premiere in March to warm reception, with Luke Cage: Season 2 dropping just 3 months after to rave reviews & followed by a 10 Episode Iron Fist: Season 2 streaming on September 13th (a major improvement on Season 1 might I add). And now the first Defender has officially returned for his 3rd outing. The Man Without Fear is back with Daredevil: Season 3, now streaming on Netflix.
Daredevil: Season 3 picks up straight after the events of Season 2 (2016) and Marvel’s The Defenders (2017). Season 3 focuses on Matt Murdock once again at war with Wilson Fisk, who is released from Prison and begins to go after everything Matt loves. This prompts Matt to drop his life as Matt Murdock the Lawyer and instead focus on being Daredevil to end Fisk’s reign once and for all.
Season 3 outdoes its predecessors by sticking to the one story line and introducing new characters that are only connected to Fisk in some way or another but gives them room to develop and unravel only because of their connection to Fisk. Take Agent Ben Poindexter (Wilson Bethel). We don’t know anything about him except he saved Fisk’s life and supervises/protects him. Fisk learns that Poindexter used his skilful aiming to kill his baseball coach during his childhood and has psychopathic tendencies that developed over time. Fisk utilises this by manipulating Poindexter into giving in to rage and unleashing his psychopathic side, posing as Daredevil and attacking The Bulletin to remove the negative opinions about Fisk from the Media.
Season 3 is supported by tremendous actors/actresses who really give it their all. Joanne Whalley as Sister Maggie Murdock, Jay Ali as Special Agent Rahul ‘Ray’ Nadeem and Wilson Bethel as Agent Ben Poindexter. All of these Cast Members really dedicate themselves to connect with Audiences emotionally, and cement themselves as important factors in the life of Matt Murdock/Daredevil.
The action in Season 3 is very brilliantly devised that they made what is actually an 11 Minute hallway fight scene. It is clear that Daredevil never ceases to amaze when it comes to displaying the skills and senses of Matthew Murdock/Daredevil. And they really milked the hell out of showing how capable Murdock really is of escaping a full Prison riot despite being injured. Well done to the Crew!
One thing I don’t particularly understand about this season is why it abruptly ends the mystery of what happened to Elektra, who was with Matt during Midland Circle’s destruction. It is even so frustrating why Matt doesn’t seem to mourn the apparent loss of the love of his life. I did feel that the writers never truly told us what happened to her and it feels like a lazy move on their part, as all we are left to do is speculate whether or not Elektra Natchios will ever be back.
